St. Bridget Church, Bridestowe

The church sits quietly on the edge of Bridestowe village, a proper medieval structure that catches you off guard with how much character it packs into such a small space. St. Bridget's dates back to the 15th century, though the tower is older still, and stepping through the door feels like stepping back in time without the pretension of somewhere trying too hard.

Inside, there's a wonderfully worn quality to everything - ancient stone, wooden pews that have seen centuries of use, and the kind of light that only comes through old glass. The dedication to St. Bridget herself adds a nice bit of Celtic history to the moorland setting. It's not a grand cathedral moment, but that's rather the point. This is intimate and genuine.

It works best for walkers tackling Dartmoor rather than a dedicated pilgrimage. Allow twenty minutes if you're passing through, longer if you're the type to sit and soak up atmosphere. The village itself is small - there's nothing here beyond the church itself, so you'll need Okehampton (about seven miles away) for actual facilities.

If you're based at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, it's a decent detour to combine with a moorland walk. Wolf Wood Treehouses, slightly further but worth the drive, makes this a natural addition to exploring the edges of Dartmoor. Visit on a clear day if possible - the surrounding landscape is the real draw, and the church becomes even more atmospheric with decent light.
