St. Botolph's Church

The tower of St. Botolph's Church dominates Boston's skyline in a way that feels almost defiant. Known locally as the Boston Stump, this medieval marvel rises 272 feet and has been guiding lost sailors and travellers for over 600 years. Step inside and you're confronted with soaring perpendicular Gothic architecture, intricate stone carving, and windows that flood the space with cold northern light.

It's genuinely impressive - the kind of building that makes you tilt your head back and wonder how they managed it without power tools. The lantern tower at the top is the real showstopper, an engineering feat that still catches historians off guard. You can climb to the top if your knees are up for it, though the narrow spiral staircase demands respect.

History buffs will have a field day. This is where the Pilgrim Fathers worshipped before heading to America, and the church's records are genuinely significant. Families with younger kids might find the climb a bit much, but the exterior is worth photographing regardless.

Admission appears to be free, though donations are gratefully received. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, longer if you're tackling the tower. It's easily walkable from Boston town centre. If you're staying at Orchard Holiday Park or Appletree Holiday Park nearby, this makes a proper morning excursion before heading elsewhere. Big Sky Hideaway, slightly further out, is better for a quieter base, but you'd still only need 15 minutes to drive here. Winter visits are atmospheric but bitter - autumn suits it better.
