Westgate Wood

A proper woodland walk near Boston that actually delivers on peace and quiet. Westgate Wood is the kind of place where you can shake off the caravan site dust and remember why you came to Lincolnshire in the first place.

It's a modest nature reserve, but don't let that put you off. The woodland itself is genuine - ancient enough to feel like you've stepped somewhere real rather than a manicured country park. You'll find decent walking trails threading through deciduous trees, and if you're lucky with timing, you might spot muntjac deer or catch sight of woodland birds. It's proper tranquil on weekday mornings. The paths are manageable without being a trudge, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's nothing to actively do once you're in there - it's about the walking itself.

Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how many detours you take. There's no café or visitor centre, so bring what you need. Free to access, which helps when you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Orchard is just 1.8 miles away, or if you've splashed out on Big Sky Hideaway's glamping, you're roughly four miles off.

Go midweek if you can, especially if you're the sort who finds fellow walkers annoying. Winter's often quieter but damper. It won't win any awards for drama, but that's rather the point when you've spent the afternoon queuing at an attraction. Sometimes woods are enough.
