St. Bartholomew’s

The church sits on a hillside above Hebden Bridge, stone-built and properly atmospheric. St. Bartholomew's has the weight of centuries about it - all grey stone and steep gables, the sort of place that makes you catch your breath when you round the corner and see it properly. Inside, there's the kind of quietness that old churches do so well, with decent medieval bones beneath later Victorian fussing.

It's the walk up that's part of the appeal, really. From Hebden Bridge town centre you climb through narrow streets that still feel like they belong to the mill-working heyday, and suddenly there's the church rising above you. The views back across the valley are worth the slight huffing of climbing alone. If you've got children they'll be climbing the walls after about twenty minutes, but for history types and anyone who appreciates proper Yorkshire stone work, it repays a proper look around.

There's no admission charge - most parish churches don't have one - though opening hours can be unpredictable. Check locally when you arrive in Hebden Bridge. If you're staying at either Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, the church makes a logical half-hour detour from exploring the town itself. It's the sort of thing you'd slot in between coffee and lunch, not a destination in itself, but the kind of spot that reminds you why you came to this part of Yorkshire in the first place.
