St Barnabas, Woodford Green

The church sits tucked away on Church Lane in Woodford Green, just east of Chingford, with enough architectural character to make it worth a quick detour if you're in the area. St Barnabas is a Victorian building with that solid, no-nonsense red brick look that defines so much of East London's religious landscape. Inside, there's decent stained glass and the sort of peaceful quiet you don't get anywhere else these days.

Historically minded visitors and anyone doing a church crawl through the region will find something to occupy them for twenty minutes or so. The churchyard has some interesting graves if you're into that sort of thing - there's a real sense of local history here, though it's not the sort of place that'll keep you for hours. It's genuinely free, which doesn't hurt.

The real appeal is context. You're not making a pilgrimage to Woodford Green specifically for St Barnabas, but if you're staying at Fowley Mead Park five miles away, or exploring the Green itself on foot, it's a decent addition to a ramble. The walk from the town centre takes about twenty minutes and gets you through some proper residential streets. Go on a weekday morning when it's quiet and you'll have the place to yourself. Sundays will have services on, obviously, so check if you're planning to visit then.
