St Barnabas

The church sits quietly on the edge of Craven Arms, a sturdy stone building that announces itself with a proper bell tower rather than making a fuss about its age. St Barnabas is a solid Victorian presence - built in the mid-1800s when the town was expanding - and worth a quick visit if you're staying in the area, though it won't eat up your afternoon.

Inside, it's straightforward Anglican work: decent stained glass, a peaceful nave, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The real draw is the setting rather than architectural fireworks. If you're walking the Shropshire Hills - and you should be - it's a natural stopping point before heading back to your accommodation.

This is more a pause than a destination. History types might find it mildly interesting as a snapshot of Victorian expansion into market towns. Kids will tolerate it for fifteen minutes, families with an interest in local heritage get more from it. There's no gift shop or tea room, so don't expect faffing about.

Getting here from any of the three glamping sites nearby - Shropshire Luxury Glamping and Shropshire Hills Glamping are both excellent - takes barely ten minutes. Free admission, naturally. Best visited on a clear day when the light comes through those windows properly. It's not worth rearranging your itinerary for, but if you're passing through Craven Arms anyway, five minutes inside costs nothing and beats staring at a car park.
