St Barnabas Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Broadway, that honey-coloured Cotswold town that everyone seems to know about. St Barnabas is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - the sort of medieval building that rewards a gentle wander round the churchyard on a Sunday morning before breakfast.

Inside, it's all soaring stone and proper craftsmanship. The windows catch light in that particular way old glass does, and if you're into medieval architecture at all, there's plenty to occupy an hour - carved roof bosses, decent memorials, the usual suspects of centuries past. It's not flashy. There's no gift shop or visitor centre, just a church that's been doing its job since, well, ages ago.

Historically-minded types will get the most from a visit, though it works fine as a quiet stop if you're already exploring Broadway itself. Families with young kids might find twenty minutes is enough unless they're really interested in old buildings. The churchyard's pleasant for a wander, particularly if the weather's decent.

If you're camped at Broadway Caravan and Motorhome Club or staying at Leedons, it's practically on your doorstep - a five-minute walk into town. Even from Cotswold Woodland Glamping over towards Aston Somerville, it's worth the short drive if you're pottering about the area anyway. No entrance fee to speak of, though do check if there are any events on before you visit. Best time is early morning when Broadway's still asleep.
