St Athanasius Monastery

You'll find this Orthodox monastery tucked away in the North Yorkshire countryside, a few miles inland from Scarborough's seafront chaos. It's a working monastic community, so expect something genuinely quiet and reflective rather than a ticketed tourist spot.

The monastery itself is modest - a working chapel where monks maintain their daily routines, and visitors are welcome to observe services or spend time in the grounds if approached respectfully. There's no gift shop, no café, no visitor centre. What you get is authenticity: the sound of chanting, the smell of incense, real spiritual practice happening around you. It's the sort of place that either resonates deeply or feels a bit awkward if you're just passing through.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at Prospect House Farm Glamping or the Camping and Caravanning Club site - both within easy reach - and you want to break up a seaside holiday with something completely different. History buffs will appreciate the Orthodox tradition, but it's not a ruin or museum. Families with restless kids might find an hour enough; contemplative types could happily spend longer walking the grounds.

The journey from Scarborough takes twenty minutes or so, making it a proper half-day excursion rather than a quick detour.
