North Yorkshire Water Park

The North Yorkshire Water Park sprawls across former gravel workings between Scarborough and the inland villages, transformed into a proper recreational space that actually works. You get open water for fishing, walking trails that loop around the lakes, and if conditions allow, some water sports activity. It's the sort of place that doesn't demand hours of your time but rewards a morning wander, especially if you're camped at one of the nearby sites like Humble Bee Farm or Cayton Village.

The appeal depends entirely on what you're after. Keen anglers will find decent stock and a reason to camp locally for a few days. Walkers get decent trails without the moorland grunt - flat, manageable, good for families with younger legs. The scenery is honest rather than dramatic - water, reeds, the occasional heron if you're lucky. It won't compete with the Yorkshire Dales if you're hiking for views, but that's not really the point.

Bringing kids? They'll manage an hour or so before asking what's next. There's nowhere to buy a decent coffee on-site that I found, so come prepared. The site is free to access, which is why it remains reasonably quiet even in summer. Late spring or early autumn works best - less crowded than peak season, better light for photography if that's your thing.

If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Cayton Bay or one of the other holiday parks within five miles, it's an easy morning detour before heading into Scarborough proper. Not unmissable, but a solid backup plan when the coast is windy.
