St Anne's Church Turton

The churchyard at Turton sits on a slope that catches the light beautifully in late afternoon, which is when I'd recommend visiting if you can manage it. St Anne's is a working parish church with roots stretching back centuries, and while the building itself won't take long to walk round, the surroundings are genuinely pleasant - proper Lancashire countryside just a few miles north of Bury.

Inside, you'll find the sort of quiet that older churches do so well. The architecture tells the story of different periods: medieval bones with later additions that speak to how communities adapt and rebuild. It's not one of those show-stopping churches that dominates a town centre, which rather suits it. The pace here is slower.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the layers, though you won't need more than half an hour unless you're doing serious brass-rubbing or taking notes. Families with younger kids might find it a bit spare - there's not much to engage them beyond the novelty of climbing the churchyard steps. Walkers, though, should absolutely make the detour if they're in the area. The footpaths around Turton are strong, and the church makes a logical pause point.
