St Anne's Church, Edgeside

The churchyard sits on a quiet rise above Rossendale, stone walls and weathered headstones catching the moor light just right. St Anne's Church is one of those places you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper working parish church with serious age on it, dating back centuries. Inside, the usual Victorian touches you'd expect in a Lancashire church - decent stained glass, hymn boards that still get used, the smell of old stone and furniture polish.

It's worth a walk if you're staying in the area, particularly if you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just fancy an hour poking around local churchyards. The views back across the valley are genuinely decent, and the building itself tells you plenty about 19th century Rossendale life. Not a destination in itself, mind you - you'd be pushing it to allow more than an hour here. But if you're based at Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping nearby and the weather's turned a bit damp, it's a solid rainy-day option.

The church operates as an active place of worship, so opening hours depend on services and community use. Best bet is to ring ahead or pop down and check the notice board. No admission charge as far as I can establish. It's the sort of stop you'd pair with a moorland walk rather than build a day around - good addition to a proper Lancashire ramble, though, with the Rossendale fells right on your doorstep.
