St Andrew's Church, South Huish

The churchyard at South Huish is properly peaceful - the kind of place where you half expect the vicar to appear round a yew tree in tweeds from about 1952. St Andrew's sits just off the main drag near Kingsbridge, a solid 15th-century parish church that won't take your breath away with Gothic drama but does exactly what it says on the tin. Stone walls, decent windows, the usual arrangement of pews and a font that's seen five centuries of christenings. What's actually worth stopping for is the graveyard itself - genuinely atmospheric on a grey Devon afternoon, with proper old slate headstones tilted at angles that tell you the ground underneath has been doing its job for ages.

You're looking at maybe 20 minutes inside, half an hour if you're the type to read every inscription and wonder about the lives behind them. History buffs will appreciate the medieval bits, though it's not heavy-hitting stuff - just solid parish church architecture that tells you more about ordinary Devon life than any museum could.
