St Andrew's Church, Sedbergh

The churchyard sits on a slope above Sedbergh's main street, and St Andrew's is one of those properly ancient parish churches that rewards a proper look. The building itself dates back to the 12th century, though it's been mauled and rebuilt more than once - you can see where the Victorians got at it, as they did everywhere. The interior is surprisingly spacious, with decent stained glass and an old font that's actually worth studying if you're into that sort of thing.

What makes it worthwhile isn't any single feature but the whole package. The churchyard itself is lovely for a wander, with views across the valley towards the fells. It's the kind of place where you can sit on a bench for ten minutes and actually feel the quiet. Families with kids won't find it gripping for long - there's no gift shop nonsense, no interactive anything - but walkers doing the South Lake District circuit will appreciate the small detour. The church is free to visit whenever the doors are open, which is most daylight hours.
