St Andrews Cathedral (Ruins)

Walking through St Andrews and suddenly you're standing in front of massive sandstone walls that stop you dead. These are the remains of what was once Scotland's most important cathedral, and even as a ruin it commands serious presence. Built in the 12th century, the place was absolutely vast - you get a real sense of medieval ambition just from what's left standing. The east gable wall is the showstopper, rising up like a broken tooth against the Fife sky. You can wander the grounds free, picking through the rubble and imagining how it must have looked when pilgrims came here by the thousands. History buffs will spend a good hour working through the stones and reading the informational boards dotted about. Kids might manage twenty minutes unless they're the type who like climbing on ancient walls, which - fair warning - the guardians probably won't appreciate. The cathedral connects directly to St Andrews itself, so it slots perfectly into a town walk rather than being a separate excursion. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Craigtoun Meadows or St Andrews Holiday Park, it's an easy leg-stretch into town. Go early morning or late afternoon when the tour groups thin out, and you'll actually hear yourself think about what stood here. It's not flashy, but it's genuinely moving if medieval architecture speaks to you.
