St Andrew, Walberswick

The church sits right at the heart of Walberswick village, a proper Suffolk gem that most people drive straight past on the way to Southwold. St Andrew's is a 14th-century building with a tower that's surprisingly grand for such a small settlement - you can see it from the marshes as you approach.

Inside, it's all soaring arches and faded wall paintings. The real draw is the sense of time passing through here - the carved bench ends are medieval, the floor flags worn by centuries of footsteps. It's the kind of place where you spend longer looking at details than you'd expect: a particular window, the way light falls on stonework.

You won't spend more than 20 minutes properly examining it, but that's not the point. Walberswick itself is what matters. The village has a working fishing fleet, a decent pub or two, and a genuinely unhurried feel that Southwold - all charm and cafe culture just along the coast - has largely lost. The beach is a stroll away, the river path leads to proper walking country through the marshes.

If you're staying at Pigs in Blankets (the camping spot just outside the village), St Andrew becomes less of a "sight to tick off" and more of a local reference point. It anchors the village in its long history without requiring any real effort. Free to wander in, and it's the kind of quiet stop that rewards you with context for the whole area. Go because you're in Walberswick, not because you came to Walberswick for the church.
