St Aldhelm's Church

The squat stone tower of St Aldhelm's Church sits on a windswept headland near Dorchester, looking like it's been there since time forgot - because it has. This is one of England's oldest parish churches, dating back to Saxon times, and the view alone justifies the journey. You're standing on actual cliffs, watching the sea churn away beneath you, with nothing but gorse and space in every direction.

Inside, it's wonderfully sparse. Stone walls, a few pews, that feeling you get in very old churches where the weight of centuries presses down properly. The tower's square and sturdy - built to last, clearly. Most visitors spend twenty minutes having a proper look round, reading the plaques, peering at the old stonework. History buffs will linger longer, spotting the Norman features and thinking about what was happening here in the 1000s.

It's free to visit, though opening hours are a bit vague - best to check locally in Dorchester before heading out. Allow an hour if you're combining it with a coastal walk, which you absolutely should. The clifftop path round here is proper dramatic. It's not a family rainy-day activity, but for walkers based near Durdle Door Holiday Park or the other spots dotted around the area, it's absolutely worth the detour. Bring a windproof jacket. The exposure up there is real.
