Oakers Wood

Thick beech and oak canopy blocks most of the sky above this proper woodland stretch between Dorchester and the coast. Oakers Wood feels wonderfully wild compared to some of Dorset's more manicured green spaces - fallen logs create natural obstacle courses and the undergrowth grows thick in places.

Families with adventurous kids will love the freedom here. No designated paths means children can scramble about, build dens from fallen branches, and generally get properly muddy. The lack of facilities keeps crowds away too.

Bird watchers do well here, especially in early morning when you might spot woodpeckers and nuthatches. The varied tree ages create different habitats - younger saplings attract different species to the mature giants.

Allow at least an hour for a decent wander, though determined den-builders could easily fill a morning. Access appears free, though parking might be limited along nearby lanes. Spring brings bluebells in patches, while autumn turns the canopy spectacular shades of copper and gold.
