Brownjohn's Copse

A proper little woodland walk just outside Dorchester, Brownjohn's Copse is the sort of place locals know about and visitors often miss. It's a small nature reserve - nothing grand, just mixed woodland with a network of paths that'll take you twenty minutes to an hour depending on which way you meander. The undergrowth is thick and the trees overhead block most of the sky, which means it stays cool even when the rest of Dorset is baking.

Walkers will appreciate the quiet. It's close enough to Dorchester for a quick escape between coffee and lunch, but far enough off the main road that you'll barely hear traffic. Bird watchers come here regularly - you'll spot robins and blackbirds at minimum, and if you're lucky something rarer in migration season. The paths are muddy after rain, so wellington boots aren't overthinking it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is half the appeal. It costs nothing, opens whenever - just turn up. With three caravan parks within walking distance, including Crossways less than half a mile away, it makes sense as a morning walk before heading to somewhere bigger like Durdle Door Holiday Park's beach access. Don't expect drama or signposting. Bring decent shoes, bring curiosity, and you'll find what you're after. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow pace.
