St Aidan's Church

The church sits in Goxhill, a village that doesn't announce itself loudly, about four miles south of Hull. St Aidan's is a proper medieval building - all red brick and straightforward Yorkshire practicality - that's been standing since the 14th century. The interior is cooler and quieter than you'd expect, with decent stained glass and the kind of stone walls that have soaked up centuries without getting fussy about it.

It's worth an afternoon visit if you're staying at Spring Valley Campsite or Burton Constable Holiday Park, both close by. History types will appreciate the brass monuments and the fact that it's genuinely old rather than a Victorian rebuild. Kids won't be bored for half an hour, though they won't be riveted either - it's a working village church, not a tourist spectacle, which is rather refreshing.

The churchyard itself has good trees and some weathered gravestones worth a wander. Access is usually free, though opening hours are patchy, so don't rely on catching it if you've got a tight schedule. Pair it with a walk round Goxhill village or combine with Burton Constable Holiday Park's arboretum if you're in the mood for a proper outing. In winter the light comes in low and makes the interior feel even older than it is. Spring's better for the churchyard.
