Sron An Isean

A steep pull up from Taynuilt gets you to this Argyll peak, and it's genuinely worth the effort. Sron An Isean isn't particularly high - around 2,500 feet - but the views across Loch Awe make the climb feel worthwhile. On a clear day you're looking out over one of Scotland's largest freshwater lochs, with Ben Cruachan dominating the horizon to the south. The path itself is a bit of a slog in places, especially higher up where the terrain gets boggy and the gradient doesn't let up, but the summit itself opens out nicely with decent 360-degree views.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of hill that rewards you for showing up, even if it's not going to appear on anyone's bucket list. An hour and a half up, thirty to forty minutes down if you're reasonable on your feet. Allow three hours return from the start of the trail, plus a bit extra if you want to sit about and take in the landscape. The nearby Loch Awe Holiday Park sits just 4.2 miles away, making this an easy half-day outing if you're based there. Pair it with a walk along the loch itself or an afternoon at the visitor centre - the area has enough to keep you occupied without being rammed with tourists.

Go in decent weather. On a grim day this becomes a rather damp, muddy trudge that loses all appeal. Autumn works particularly well when the light starts getting proper golden across the water.
