Doire nan Sáor

The walk up Doire nan Sáor takes you through proper Scottish hill country, steep enough to earn your views but short enough not to exhaust you. It's a modest peak, mind - you're not climbing Ben Nevis - but that's rather the point. Starting from Taynuilt, you get onto rough moorland fairly quickly, and the ascent is relentless in patches. The summit delivers decent views across Argyll's broader landscape, though the weather here can turn in minutes. Allow two to three hours return if you're at a reasonable pace.

This is really one for hillwalkers who like a good sweat without needing a full day's expedition. Families with children capable of proper walking will manage it, though younger kids might find the bog sections tedious. In winter it can be slippery, so know what you're doing before you head out.

It's a cracking addition to an Argyll walking holiday if you want something straightforward and unpretentious. Don't expect solitude; this isn't an obscure hill, but it's genuine enough for all that.
