Dun Mor, Motte

A grass-covered mound rising abruptly from the landscape near Taynuilt - that's Dun Mor, a Norman motte from around the 12th century. It's essentially an earthwork fortress, the kind of defensive structure planted across Britain after 1066 to assert control. What you get is a short walk to the top of a steep artificial hill with views across the surrounding countryside. The climb takes maybe ten minutes and isn't difficult, though the ground can be boggy depending on the season.

This appeals most to archaeology enthusiasts and serious history walkers - not the sort of place for casual strollers after an ice cream. You won't find interpretation boards or facilities. It's just you, the mound, and your imagination about what life was like when it actually meant something as a stronghold. Allow thirty minutes total.

Free to visit, as far as anyone knows. Best done in drier weather when the grass isn't slick. It slots reasonably well into a park-based holiday - you're close to Loch Awe Holiday Park (2.2 miles away) and Loch View Luxury Pod (6.2 miles), both solid choices for a base. If you're already staying around here exploring the lochs and hills, Dun Mor justifies a brief detour. But it's not worth a special journey on its own. Think of it as the supporting act to bigger attractions in Argyll, not the main event.
