Squire Karel De Greve

The Squire Karel De Greve nature reserve sits just outside Ballycastle, a proper haven if you're after something quieter than the usual Causeway Coast tourist trail. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction - woodland, grassland, and wetland all rolled together in a way that feels genuinely wild without being pretentious about it.

Walking through here, you're looking at a serious bit of ecological restoration. The reserve was named after a Belgian conservationist who clearly knew what he was doing, and you can see the results in the native trees and the bird life. Bring binoculars if you're remotely keen on birdwatching; the wetland sections attract everything from herons to kingfishers depending on the season. It's not dramatic cliffside stuff like you get further along the coast, but that's rather the point.

For families, this works well as a gentler alternative to the main attractions. Kids won't be climbing anything dangerous, but there's enough woodland to explore and streams to investigate. You'll need a good hour minimum, probably two if you're serious about spotting anything. The paths are manageable year-round, though winter can be boggy.

If you're based at Watertop Farm - the nearby holiday park just 4 miles away - this makes an excellent half-day outing. It slots nicely between beach time and the bigger attractions inland. Go early morning in spring or autumn if you want the best wildlife chances. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
