Spur Battery

The squat stone walls of Spur Battery sit on a hillside above Balloch like something left behind after a long-forgotten skirmish. This is a Victorian-era gun battery, built as part of Scotland's 19th-century coastal defences, and it's genuinely atmospheric if you're willing to hunt it out. The views down Loch Lomond make the scramble worthwhile, and you get a proper sense of what this place was meant to do - keep watch over the water.

It's not a grand visitor centre situation. There are no café facilities, no interpretation boards spelling everything out, and access details can be fuzzy. This is for people who actually enjoy a bit of legwork and don't mind poking around ruins. History types will find it rewarding. Families with young kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're keen on rambling and climbing over old stonework.

Allow an hour if you're walking from Balloch itself, less if you drive closer. There's no charge as far as anyone can work out, though the exact access arrangements are best checked locally. Spring and autumn are cracking times - good light, not baking hot.

If you're based at Lomond Woods Holiday Park or Loch Lomond Retreat nearby, this makes a decent half-day outing combined with a walk along the loch shore. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're interested in Scottish military history, but don't expect polish or facilities. Go for the isolation and the views.
