Boturich Castle

Standing on the banks of Loch Lomond near Balloch, Boturich Castle is a rather modest affair - more fortified house than the imposing stronghold you might expect. Built in the 15th century, it's a two-storey rectangular tower that's seen better days, but there's something genuinely atmospheric about it, especially if you catch it in soft afternoon light when the loch reflects like a mirror behind it.

You can view it from outside, and that's honestly enough for most visitors. There's no grand tour inside - you're looking at the exterior, taking in the setting, maybe pondering what life was like for whoever lived here when the Highlands were properly wild. It's the sort of place that appeals to castle enthusiasts and walkers rather than families expecting interactive exhibits or a gift shop.

The real draw is the location. It sits beautifully within easy reach of Loch Lomond Retreat, just 1.5 miles away, and works perfectly as a morning detour if you're based at any of the nearby holiday parks. The walk from Balloch takes about 45 minutes and passes through decent scenery. Allow 20-30 minutes if you've driven to it - time enough to circle the grounds and take some photos.

Visit when the weather's decent. There's precious little shelter, and on a grey drizzly day it can feel a bit bleak rather than atmospheric. Free to access from what we can tell, though do check the website for any seasonal closures or restrictions before making the trip.
