Balloch Castle

The castle sits right on the banks of Loch Lomond, commanding views across Scotland's most famous freshwater loch. Built in the 15th century, it's a proper fortress - all sturdy stone walls and defensive positioning rather than the fussy fairytale sort. You can walk around the grounds, explore what remains of the interior, and get genuinely good photographs from almost any angle, especially if the light hits the water right.

It's a solid 45-minute stop if you're not rushing. The castle itself won't occupy hours - the rooms are sparse and the climb is modest - but the setting does the heavy lifting. Families with kids aged six upwards will find it interesting enough; younger ones might get restless once they've had a poke about. If you're into military history or Scottish fortifications, you'll spot the clever defensive features. Everyone else comes for the loch views and the chance to say they've been inside an actual castle without a huge time commitment.

The location is brilliant for a park holiday. You're less than a mile from Loch Lomond Retreat, which has a solid rating and would make a comfortable base. The castle grounds are free to wander - it's a genuinely accessible piece of history. Balloch itself is tiny, so stock up on supplies elsewhere before you head out. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see across the water properly. Rain and mist are atmospheric but kill the views entirely.
