Springwell Lake

The water at Springwell Lake sits dead still most mornings, which is precisely why it's worth the short drive from Uxbridge. You get proper walking territory here - the kind where you can actually think without crowds - and the paths loop around nicely without demanding peak fitness. It's a lake, fundamentally, but there's something about the way the tree line reflects on the surface that makes it feel less like a tourist tick-box and more like somewhere locals have known about for years.

Walkers and birdwatchers will have a decent time of it. Bring binoculars and you might spot something interesting; come empty-handed and you'll still enjoy the circuit. The whole loop takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and whether you stop to actually look at anything. If you're camping at Highclere - just four miles away - this is a natural morning or late-afternoon option that breaks up the park routine without requiring major travel time.

The lake isn't dramatically scenic in the postcard sense. It won't stop you dead in your tracks. But that's partly the appeal. There's no rammed café, no gift shop, no sense you're ticking boxes. Come early or later in the day if you want solitude. Worth noting: facilities are thin on the ground, so sort yourself in Uxbridge first. For families with young children, it's manageable but not thrilling - older kids who actually like walking will appreciate it more.
