The reserve occupies about 22 acres of what was once gravel extraction pits, now transformed into something ecologically serious. It's free to visit, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you wander in during daylight. Spring and autumn migrations are when the place really comes alive, though winter brings its own interest with overwintering species. Families with older kids who can manage a steady pace and a bit of quiet will get more from it than those with toddlers. The car park is small, so go early if you're visiting on a decent day.
