Ruislip Lido Beach

The beach at Ruislip Lido is a proper surprise if you're expecting a seaside day out in landlocked Hertfordshire. What you actually get is a 67-acre reservoir with a sandy beach area, woodland walks, and enough space that you won't feel crammed in even on warm weekends. The water's shallow for a good stretch, which makes it genuinely decent for families with younger kids who want to paddle without the Atlantic trying to kill them.

In summer the place fills up with swimmers, kayakers, and people who've driven out from Uxbridge specifically for this - it's the closest thing to a proper beach for miles around. There's a leisure complex nearby with cafes, though bring your own snacks if you want to avoid inflated prices. The woodland paths around the water are lovely for a ramble, and if you time it right during golden hour the light bouncing off the water is actually quite special.

It's free to access, though parking is modest so arrive early on sunny days or you'll be circling for ages. Budget a couple of hours minimum if you're swimming, longer if walking appeals. Winter's quieter but the water's brass monkeys, obviously.

If you're based at Wyatts Covert Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Ruislip Lido makes an easy afternoon trip without the faff of traveling far. It's not the Lake District, but for what it is - a working reservoir that's been made accessible - it does the job well.
