Springfield Park

Springfield Park is a proper nature reserve on the outskirts of Bury, the kind of place that rewards you for getting off the main roads. It's not massive - you can walk the whole thing in under an hour - but it's genuine countryside with woodland paths, open grassland, and the sort of quiet you won't find in town.

The reserve works well for families wanting a gentle walk without the crowds you'd get at bigger attractions. Kids will do fine here for an hour or so, mucking about on the paths and spotting birds if you're lucky. Birdwatchers actually rate it; you get woodpeckers, thrushes, and if you time it right during migration season, something more interesting might turn up.

Since it's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park, expect proper woodland rather than manicured lawns. The paths are straightforward enough, though it can get muddy after rain. Go in spring or early summer when there's actual wildlife about and the place doesn't feel quite so dormant.

If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road - that's only a couple of miles away - Springfield makes for a solid morning's walk before heading back for lunch. It's the sort of place that doesn't take much planning. Just show up, follow the paths, breathe a bit of fresh air. Not dramatic, not Instagram-worthy, just a sensible piece of Lancashire green space that does exactly what it says on the tin.
