If you're after serious woodland credentials or looking to bag peaks, the moors above Holmfirth offer more. Spring Wood is gentler - ideal for a morning wander before breakfast or a late afternoon circuit when you've had enough of driving.

It's free to access, naturally. The nearest proper facilities are back in Holmfirth itself, which has pubs and cafes worth knowing about. If you're camped at Secret Valley Escapes or Whitegate - both brilliant sites, mind - Spring Wood makes an easy addition to your day without any fuss. Go early or late to avoid the school-run crowd, and don't expect manicured paths. That's rather the point.
