Spring Gardens is a nature reserve where the water does most of the talking - reed beds stretch out properly, and if you time it right, you'll see wading birds picking their way through the shallows. It's the kind of place where you can spend an hour or three without feeling rushed, though honestly, two hours is about the sweet spot unless you're a serious birder.

This works best for walkers and anyone who gets a kick out of spotting wildlife. Children will manage fine if they're into that sort of thing, but it's not a playground situation - you need patience and binoculars help enormously. The paths are straightforward enough, mostly flat, which is a mercy when you're carrying gear. Spring and autumn are your best bets for seeing migrating birds; summer can feel a bit quiet if you're after drama.
