Spout Hill - Holt Natural Springs

You'll find this little chalk spring bubbling up out of the ground just east of Holt, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet wander rather than a rushed visit. The water emerges naturally from the chalk marl, creating a small pool that feeds into a stream - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. It's free to access and there's no official gate or visitor centre to navigate, which means you get the landscape without the infrastructure.

The reserve itself is compact. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here, pottering about the boardwalks and paths that cross the damp ground. Naturalists and photographers come for the plants - marsh marigold, ragged robin, various sedges - while casual walkers appreciate the quiet and the handful of birds you'll spot. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're keen on spotting insects or frogs. The ground can be boggy even in drier months, so decent footwear is essential.

If you're based at Kelling Heath Holiday Park or North Norfolk Camping just down the road, this works as an easy add-on to a morning or afternoon. It pairs well with a visit to Holt itself - the town has proper independent shops and a couple of decent cafes. Don't expect Broadland drama or rare warblers every visit. What you get is a genuine piece of Norfolk's wetland ecology, unglamorous and authentic. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and like that sort of thing.
