Lose Hall

The earthworks at Lose Hall, just outside Holt in Norfolk, are the kind of place that rewards patience more than spectacle. What you're looking at are the heavily overgrown remains of a medieval moated site - basically a defensive settlement surrounded by ditches that are now more hummock than moat. It's not Instagram material, but if you're interested in how ordinary people lived 700 or 800 years ago, this quiet patch of Norfolk farmland tells a proper story.

You'll spend maybe half an hour here poking around the bumps and hollows, trying to work out where the hall actually stood. It's free to access and peaceful - the kind of spot where you hear birds more than traffic. The nearest town is Holt, a pleasant enough market town if you need supplies, and there are several caravan parks within striking distance: Kelling Heath and Woodlands Caravan Park are both under three miles away.

Who gets the most from this? Local history enthusiasts and archaeology students, mainly. It won't entertain young children for long unless they're into climbing banks. Walkers might enjoy it as a waypoint on a longer ramble through the North Norfolk countryside rather than a destination in itself. There's nothing on-site - no information board, no facilities - so go in armed with a bit of research or grab a local history guide from Holt first. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the earthworks easier to read. It's the kind of attraction that justifies a Norfolk caravan holiday if you're already interested in medieval settlement patterns, but don't expect much else.
