Spike Island

The salt marshes around Frodsham draw birdwatchers like moths to a flame, and Spike Island sits right in the thick of it. This small nature reserve is essentially a working salt marsh - proper muddy, proper alive with wading birds depending on the season. You're looking at curlews, redshank, and if you time it right, overwintering geese sweeping across the flats.

It's not a walk-round-and-tick-the-box kind of place. You need binoculars and patience, ideally a tide table. The appeal is entirely in the birds and the raw, windswept landscape - no facilities, no visitor centre, no cafe. Low tide exposes the channels and gives you the best views; high tide pushes everything closer to the paths. Winter and spring migrations are when it properly sings.

Families with young children might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen ornithologists. Dedicated twitchers and serious walkers will spend hours here. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're doing it properly, though you can dash round in 45 minutes if you just want the experience.

It slots nicely into a broader Frodsham exploration - the town itself has riverside walks and sits on the edge of the Cheshire countryside. Just go prepared for mud and wind.
