Specimen Lake

Specimen Lake sits just outside Witney, a modest water body that punches above its weight if you're after a quiet spot away from the busier Oxfordshire attractions. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no fairgrounds, no gift shops, just water, trees, and the occasional heron if you're lucky.

The lake itself is straightforward: a decent walk around the perimeter takes about an hour, depending on pace. Water levels vary by season, but it's genuinely pleasant on a clear day. Families with younger kids might get restless after that, though keen birdwatchers and photographers will find reason to linger. The surrounding paths are mostly flat and easy underfoot, which matters if you're choosing between this and hiking elsewhere in the Cotswolds.

It works brilliantly as a morning outing if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Hardwick Parks is practically on the doorstep at less than half a mile, and Lincoln Farm Park Partnership sits just over a mile away. Both give you easy access to the lake without needing to drive far. If you're camping at Cotswold Edge Caravan & Camping near Ducklington, it's still only twenty minutes or so, making it a reasonable post-breakfast walk.

The real question: is it worth a special trip to Witney? Not particularly. Is it a solid addition to a longer Oxfordshire holiday? Absolutely. Bring binoculars, expect to spend an hour, and don't expect crowds.
