Ancient oaks and towering pines create a proper canopy overhead as you wander through this Lancashire woodland just outside Preston. Spa Wood feels refreshingly wild compared to many managed forests - fallen logs become impromptu seats, and narrow paths snake between moss-covered rocks that look like they've been there since the last ice age.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place, and you'll understand why once you see how the mutts bound through the undergrowth with such obvious joy. Families with older children will find plenty to explore, though pushchair users might struggle with the uneven terrain and tree roots that seem determined to trip you up.

The wood feels properly secluded despite being so close to town. No visitor centre or car park fees to worry about - just turn up and start walking. Allow at least an hour to get a decent feel for the place, though serious ramblers could easily spend a morning here if they connect with the longer footpaths that branch off into the surrounding countryside.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Claylands or Gibsons Barn? This makes for a lovely morning constitutional before the kids get restless. The peace and quiet here provides a welcome contrast to the more commercialised attractions around Preston.
