Southwood Rig

The walk up Southwood Rig isn't dramatic, but that's rather the point. Rising just shy of 500 metres near Biggar, it's the sort of hill that rewards you quietly rather than with fanfare. The views across South Lanarkshire roll out in proper waves when you reach the top - moorland stretching toward the Southern Uplands, and on a clear day you'll spot the Pentland Hills away to the northeast. It takes a solid hour to get up there from the carpark, nothing technical, just steady legs and decent boots.

Walkers will genuinely enjoy this one. It's not a tick-box Munro, so you avoid the crowds, and the moorland terrain keeps things interesting without being punishing. Families with kids of ten upwards would manage it fine, though younger ones might find the gently rolling ascent a bit of a slog. The summit itself is open and windy - perfect for a flask of tea and a sit-down, less ideal if the weather's closing in.

Free to walk, obviously. Allow two to three hours return depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. Mount View Caravan Park sits less than a mile away, which makes this an ideal half-day outing if you're basing yourself nearby. Go midweek if you can and you'll likely have the place to yourself. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer can draw midges up here, and winter needs proper preparation.
