The Southwold Railway Trust runs a narrow-gauge line that's been restored piece by piece, and you can ride the heritage trains on select weekends and during summer holidays. It's a proper little operation: volunteers maintain everything, the stations look authentically period, and the rolling stock tells a story about branch-line railways that once crisscrossed East Anglia.

What you actually do here depends on when you visit. On running days, you board a train for a gentle trundle through the Suffolk countryside - nothing dramatic, just the kind of journey that lets you appreciate how different the landscape was when these lines were built. Between services, there's a small museum with artefacts, photographs, and enough detail to keep railway enthusiasts busy for a good hour or more. Families with young children tend to love it; the trains move slowly enough that kids can actually see things, and there's something magical about riding in vintage carriages.

Check the website before you go because timetables vary significantly by season. Entry and rides aren't free, but prices are reasonable. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Pigs in Blankets is closest at a mile away, or Cliff House and Henstead Fields are a short drive - this makes a decent half-day visit. The beach at Southwold is equally close, so you could easily combine them. It won't take all day unless you're genuinely obsessed with railways, but it's worth the detour if you're in the area.
