South Sutor Gun Emplacements

The Sutors of Cromarty are two sandstone headlands that guard the entrance to the Cromarty Firth, and the South Sutor holds the remnants of a World War II gun battery that's genuinely atmospheric to explore. You're walking through overgrown defences where soldiers once kept watch for German vessels - concrete gun emplacements, crumbling anti-tank obstacles, and rusted metal fixtures are still visible among the heather and gorse. The site itself is free to access, sitting on open moorland with paths that are decent enough but rough in places, so decent boots are wise.

Allow a solid hour here if you're into military history; less if you just want the views. The real draw is standing on the headland itself - you get proper 360-degree scenery across the Firth towards the Black Isle, and on clear days it's genuinely commanding. History buffs will find this more rewarding than casual walkers, though the landscape alone makes the trip worthwhile. Families with older kids interested in wartime Britain will get something out of it, but there's no interpretation boards or visitor facilities, so come prepared.
