The Thames path here is genuinely lovely, especially if you time it right with the light. South Stoke Recreation Ground sits just outside Wallingford and works as either a proper stroll or an excuse to burn off energy if you've got kids in tow.

It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get actual wildlife - reed warblers, great crested grebes if you're lucky, the usual riverside birds. The ground itself is pretty straightforward: open grassland that floods in winter and becomes a bit boggy underfoot come autumn. The real draw is the Thames access and the chance to walk without fighting crowds. Most people spend an hour here, maybe two if they're keen on sketching or serious birdwatching.

For families based at Benson Waterfront up the road, this makes an easy morning venture. The path is flat and accessible, though buggies can get stuck in muddier sections. Bring binoculars if you're at all interested in identifying birds - the reed beds are proper habitat.

Free to access, as far as anyone can tell, and no obvious facilities, so pack what you need. Go midweek if you want peace. Weekends pull walkers from Wallingford itself. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point - this is where locals come when they want actual quiet on the Thames.
