South Sea Plantation

The woodland at South Sea Plantation, just outside Bridlington, is a proper walk through what feels like genuine Yorkshire countryside - quiet enough that you'll actually hear the birds. It's a working forest rather than a manicured attraction, so don't expect themed trails or visitor centres. What you get instead is a chance to stretch your legs under the trees, away from the coast's amusement arcades and fish-and-chip queues.

The plantation itself is straightforward - mixed woodland with decent paths that work for families with kids old enough to manage a decent walk. Nothing too strenuous, nothing particularly dramatic either. On a clear day the light filtering through is lovely, and if you catch it in autumn the colours are worth the drive. An hour here suits most people; it's not the sort of place you'd build a whole day around unless you're serious about woodland walking.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Flamborough Glamping is practically on the doorstep, while Haven Thornwick Bay and the Bridlington caravan sites are within spitting distance - it's an easy add-on to break up your time between beach visits and the town itself. The Bridlington headland and seafront are close enough for a morning here, lunch in town, then the beach in the afternoon. Free to access as far as anyone can tell, which helps.

It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what you need when the holiday parks start feeling a bit confined.
