South Pier Blackpool

The Victorian ironwork stretches 1,100 yards into the Irish Sea, creaking gently beneath your feet as you walk out. That's South Pier in Blackpool - a proper piece of seaside theatre that's been pulling visitors since 1893. It's not the flashiest of the three piers anymore, but it's got character in spades.

You'll find the usual pier fare: amusement arcade, fairground rides, a few bars and chip shops dotted along the length. Nothing fancy, nothing pretending to be fancy. Kids will get a kick out of the rides and the sheer oddness of walking out into the sea on metal and wood. Adults just wanting a stroll and a fish and chips can take it at their own pace - allow an hour, maybe 90 minutes if you're stopping for refreshments.

The best reason to come is the view back to shore. From the far end, Blackpool's seafront spreads out properly - the Tower, the promenade, the whole sweep of it. On a clear day you can see the Lake District hills in the distance. Come at sunset if you can; the light's golden and the crowds thin out.

It's free to walk on, though rides cost a few quid each. Facilities are basic but adequate. If you're staying at Haven Marton Mere or any of the holiday parks within a couple of miles, this is a solid half-day out that doesn't require much planning. Worth doing once, though don't expect anything groundbreaking.
