South Marston Recreation Ground

The open grassland at South Marston Recreation Ground is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready, but it's genuinely peaceful - the kind of spot where you can actually hear birdsong without a visitor centre blaring in the background.

You get a proper nature reserve here in Wiltshire's quieter corner, with meadows that attract plenty of wildlife. There are walking paths threading through, nothing strenuous, just gentle ambling. The best time is late spring through summer when the wildflowers are doing their thing and the place is teeming with insects and birds. Visit in winter and it's rather bleak, though walkers with dogs seem unbothered by that.

Families with restless kids might find an hour enough before everyone's ready to move on. But if you're into birdwatching or you simply need headspace away from the Cotswolds tourist trail, it's well worth the detour. Bring binoculars and patience.

From Botswicky Copse it's very close by - you could easily pair this with a stay at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky and have a low-key morning here before heading elsewhere. Faringdon Grange is further out but still within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area. There's no charge as far as I can tell, and no faffing about with opening hours either. Just turn up and wander.
