South Marine Park

The coastal path drops down to South Marine Park and you're immediately struck by how much of the Northumberland shoreline feels genuinely wild despite being barely five minutes from Whitley Bay's seafront. This isn't a manicured country estate - it's a proper nature reserve where the cliffs do their thing and the birds get on with life regardless of visitors.

You get rocky outcrops, grassland that's never seen a lawnmower, and views across the North Sea that shift entirely depending on weather and light. The rock pools are decent at low tide if you've got kids in tow, though they'll tire of peering into them after twenty minutes. Bring proper shoes - it's slippery in places and the paths aren't exactly maintained like a municipal park.

This works best as part of a longer coastal walk rather than a destination in itself. Spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're leisurely about it, then keep moving along the shoreline. The light's better in late afternoon, and it's least crowded on weekday mornings. The reserve sits roughly midway between Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay and Old Hartley Caravan Club, so it's perfect if you're basing yourself at either site for a few days.

Nature enthusiasts will rate it highly - the birdwatching potential is genuine. Families looking for dramatic action might find it a bit slow. It's free, as nature reserves tend to be, and the main thing it demands is decent weather and an ounce of patience.
