South Huish Wetlands Reserve

The wetlands here, just outside Kingsbridge, are genuinely worth an hour of your time if you're the sort who gets excited by birds and boggy ground. It's a working nature reserve - proper conservation stuff, not just a park with some water features - so what you see depends on the season and time of day. Visit early morning if you want the best chance of spotting something interesting. Reedbeds, open water, marshy bits - it's the kind of landscape that looks flat and boring until you actually stop and watch it. Then you notice the movement.

Ideally suited to birdwatchers, naturalists, and anyone after a peaceful half-hour walk away from the crowds. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting drama - there's no playground or café - but older children who can handle binoculars and a bit of patience will see actual wildlife rather than captive animals.

No facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The fact that details are thin on the ground suggests it's low-key and undeveloped, which is part of the charm. Check before you visit as opening times aren't widely advertised - it may be access by arrangement or seasonal.

If you're based at South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm or Karrageen just down the road, this is an easy addition to your morning. Combine it with a proper walk elsewhere in the South Hams, or pop into Kingsbridge itself for lunch. The reserve sits nicely between the campsites and the larger attractions, so it's worth slotting in rather than a destination trip on its own.
