About South Downs National Park
The park stretches from near Petersfield westward, and the walking is genuinely excellent. You'll find yourself on ancient ridgeways that have been in use for millennia, passing through beech hangers and open downland where the views go on for miles. On a clear day you can see the Solent. Walkers absolutely thrive here - there's everything from gentle afternoon strolls to proper leg-burners along the ridge paths. Cyclists do well too on the network of bridleways, and horse riders have marked routes throughout.
Historically, the Downs are riddled with Iron Age forts and Saxon settlements. The chalk itself tells stories if you know where to look. But honestly, most people come for the landscape and the solitude more than the archaeology.
If you're staying at Adhurst Yurts or Cedar Valley - both excellent bases - you're perfectly positioned. The park is free to roam, and there's no time limit; you set your own agenda. Early morning in spring or autumn wins, though. Quieter, better light, and the downland gets genuinely moving when the mist lifts off the valleys. Avoid peak summer weekends unless you don't mind the crowds.
