About South Down
You're looking at rolling moorland in all directions once you reach the summit. On a clear day, you can see right across Dartmoor's high ground. When the cloud comes in, which it does frequently, you're basically paying to stare at grey nothingness - so timing matters. Early morning in summer gives you the best odds.
It's proper moorland walking, so bring proper boots and water. The path is clear enough but it's exposed, so wind can be relentless. Families with young kids might find the exposed terrain a bit much on windy days, but confident walkers will think it's worthwhile. The moorland vegetation and the open space make it feel wild without being technical.
Free to access, obviously - it's open moorland. Allow at least three hours including the summit stop. If you're staying at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, you're well-positioned: South Down is close enough for a morning visit before exploring further into Dartmoor. Wolf Wood Treehouses, a few miles further out, also puts you within easy reach.
Go when the weather forecast looks settled. Don't go when it looks iffy.
