South Devon National Landscape

The South Devon National Landscape stretches across some genuinely stunning countryside between Kingsbridge and the coast, and it's the sort of place that rewards you for getting off the main roads. We're talking rolling hills, proper farmland, and sudden glimpses of the sea that catch you off guard. There's no single 'attraction' here in the theme-park sense - it's more about walking, driving the quieter lanes, and soaking up the actual landscape rather than ticking boxes.

Histor buffs will find plenty to occupy them: Bronze Age barrows, medieval settlements, the whole lot scattered across the valleys. If you're into walking, the terrain is gentle enough for families but interesting enough that you won't feel like you're trudging through a park brochure. The villages dotted through here - Slapton, Blackawton, that sort of country - have proper character rather than the twee overdone look you get in some parts of Devon.

You'll want a full day minimum, ideally two. There's no admission fee because you're just walking or driving through; it's a landscape, not a ticketed destination. The camping options nearby are top-notch - Wilton Farm and South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm both rate exceptionally well and put you right in the middle of it all. Honestly, if you're basing yourself at one of those sites, the National Landscape becomes your entire holiday rather than something you pop off to visit. Spring and early autumn are best; summer gets rammed with holidaymakers.
