Somerset Space Walk - Saturn

The Somerset Space Walk is a rather audacious attempt to map out our solar system across the Somerset landscape, with Saturn being one of the key stops. It's the sort of thing that sounds like it might be a bit naff on paper, but actually works surprisingly well once you're out there walking it.

Saturn itself is represented as a gallery installation - nothing too fancy, mind you, but it does the job of making you pause and actually think about scale and distance in a way that sitting in a planetarium doesn't quite manage. The whole concept is spread across Taunton and the surrounding area, so you're essentially getting an excuse to explore on foot while learning bits of astronomy.

Families with kids aged eight and up will probably get the most from this. Younger children might lose interest unless they're already space-obsessed, and adults who just want a straightforward walk might find the educational stops a bit thin. That said, it's free to wander the route, which is the real selling point.

If you're basing yourself at Cornish Farm Touring Park five miles away, this makes a decent half-day excursion - take the walk at your own pace, hit Saturn, maybe grab lunch in Taunton town centre. Don't expect it to fill a whole day, but as a quirky addition to a week in Somerset, it's worth the detour. The walk itself is proper gentle, and you'll see bits of the town you'd otherwise miss.
